CAMBRIDGESHIRE NATURE NOTEBOOK

Welcome to Cambridgeshire Nature Notebook, part of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Biological Records Centre.

We hope you enjoy using this website to learn about and tell us about the wildlife that you encounter in your daily lives in and around Cambridgeshire.

We want to know where your pond is!

This year we are coordinating a pond survey and want to know where all of the ponds in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are- including garden ponds!

If you have a pond in your garden or know where one, is let us know by clicking on the record button below.

After that why not sign up to be a full recorder and let us know what is in your pond, as well being able to keep your own online record of species you are spotting!

Species of the month

Each month we will be highlighting a specific species which is particularly good to record during the month. For November we have chosen Blackthorn for you to look out for and record. This native shrub is widespread in the UK and is often used in hedgerows forming an impenetrable, thorny thicket and therefore a very effective barrier.

The little white blossoms appear before the leaves in March, presenting a stark contrast against the very dark bark and thorns. Because the blackthorn flowers appear so early in the year they are often referred to as the ‘heralds of spring’. The fruits, which are called sloe, start off in late summer with a dark blue bloom but become shiny black when they ripen in late October. They are quite bitter and best picked after the first frost in November. To find out more about this useful hedging plant, and to make a record of where you have seen it, please click on Blackthorn.
